Parents as Teachers & Healthy Families

These home visitation programs provide the opportunity for parents to learn skills and gain knowledge about their child’s healthy development in the home setting.  Understanding age/stage related development is essential for a parent who wishes to guide their child’s growth in the most positive ways.  (Both programs are offered at no cost to the participant families.)

Parents as Teachers
As a parent, you are your child’s first and most influential teacher.  Parents as Teachers (PAT) can help you lay a strong foundation for your child’s future success.  The Born to Learn© Curriculum Prenatal to 3 Years (2005), is the base used by certified parent educators as they provide home visits, facilitate group meetings, and conduct developmental screenings of children enrolled in the program.  Participating parents learn important skills that allow them to enhance their child’s development.

Parents as Teachers curriculum content is based on reliable and current research in the areas of child development and neuroscience.  Research has shown why the first three years are critical to a child’s success later in life.  (By age three, children will have learned 75% of all the language skills they will have as adults.)  This early learning program has much to offer all families with young children.

Healthy Families
Healthy Families is a voluntary home visitation program designed to provide support and education through home visits with a Family Support Specialist.  Once enrolled in the program, families receive home visits, learn to create warm relationships with their children, and gain confidence in their parenting role.

The Healthy Families team offers support in reaching family goals.  The Family Support Specialist can connect a family with community resources to assist with housing, job skills training, counseling, and other services.  You can enroll during pregnancy or up until you baby is three months old.  Once enrolled, you can participate in the program for up to five years and withdraw when you choose.
